United Nations Peace Messenger Cities

United Nations Peace Messenger Cities are cities around the world that have volunteered for an initiative sponsored by the United Nations to promote peace and understanding between nations.
The movement began in the International Year for Peace 1986 when the UN Secretary General appointed 62 cities as the initial Peace Messenger Cities. Representatives of these cities met at Verdun, France in September 1988 to adopt the Peace Cities Charter which lists the aims:
  • to promote understanding between peoples
  • to enable the promotion of solidarity between them
  • to spread the spirit of peace, tolerance and mutual respect
  • to combat war, hunger and natural disasters in the service of mankind in dignity and respect
  • to make our governments understand that nuclear disarmament is of primary necessity, as also human rights, liberty and the free circulation of individuals.
The International Association of Peace Messenger Cities was established in 1996 and now administers the programme on behalf of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. There are now 96 participating cities including Atlanta, Berlin, Bogota, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Copenhagen, Geneva, Helsinki, Kiev, Lima, Madrid, Melbourne, Minsk, Moscow, New Delhi, Prague, Rome, San Francisco, San Jose, Sarajevo, St Petersburg, Stockholm, Tashkent, Tokyo, Toronto and Vancouver.
